Breaking the Vicious Cycle of Negative Thoughts

Believe it or not, most of the unhappy moments of your life do not come from the circumstances of your life, but from the negative stories that your mind concocts about those circumstances. And, this is an enormous revelation. If you have read Buddhism articles and literature somewhere, you would know that they call it the second arrow.

The first arrow, however, is the actual encounter with the negative situation and experience. The pain we experience here is because of the external circumstances, which are not under our control. Some of these instances are losing our job, losing a family member, getting into conflicts, experience grief, and so on.

The second arrow is the thoughts that we create in our minds. The circumstances might be negative, but we can channel our thoughts positively. On the other hand, we start reacting also negatively, shaming, blaming, aversion, we get upset and angry, and so, we trigger our second arrow. It is because of the second arrow that pressures you to re-live an incident that only happened once.

It is important to note that the pain of the second arrow is our choice. So, we cannot really control the circumstances, but we can control our thoughts and whatever is going on in our minds. We can choose not to get stuck with what has happened, not to get frenzy due to unnecessary thoughts that may be a detrimental effect on our mental and physical health, and direct the same energy into growing our awareness.

So, we call people to grow the power of awareness within them, do not let your mind lose the ability to make you happy. Being happy and being unhappy is a state of mind.
